Changdeokgung Palace, built in 1405 as a secondary palace of the Joseon Dynasty, is located to the east of Gyeongbokgung Palace, hence also known as “Donggung.” From the reign of the 9th king of Joseon, Seongjong, many kings resided here, making it function as the main palace. Destroyed during the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592, it was rebuilt by Gwanghaegun in 1611, attracting tourists with its harmonious blend of natural and artificial beauty.
